Arthritis in the Knee Can Cause Loss of Mobility

The moment people grow older, most of them experience different pains and aches. These people then put the entire blame on the cartilage loss in their joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the knee. It is basically a degenerative disease which causes the cartilage loss in the knee joint. It is the cartilage which helps the tibia and the femur bones to rub against one another. Generally, with passing age, it happens that the cartilage weakens and slowly stops functioning. With the absence of cartilage in its place, the arthritis in the knee becomes more pronounced in nature which eventually results in the loss of mobility.


While the older populations above the age of 50 are generally found to suffer from osteoarthritis, it is observed that the younger generations are also contracted to this disease. Though, the most common form of arthritis in the knee is osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis also needs to be blamed on the pain related to arthritis in the knee.


An inflammatory condition which attacks the cartilage is Rheumatoid arthritis. It usually occurs in both the knees, while the post traumatic arthritis emerges from an injury or an accident.


Apart from the pain related to arthritis in the knee, following a period of immobility, the knee may lock up or it may feel as it would not hold up the weight of the person while walking. The pain associated with arthritis in the knee may become worse after a long period of sitting or performing certain physical activities or climbing stairs which can cause a high knee brunt.

Although most sufferers of arthritis in the knee experience a gradual pain which increases with time, it may be possible for a person to experience the sudden coming of arthritis in the knee. On a typical basis, the first pain that cramps the knee would be sensed as a sheer annoyance till the vanishing of some more cartilages. In case a person carries more weight through fat, it is better to shed those extra pounds which would help to ease the pain. This is largely because it is the knee which is responsible for dropping grinding impact of the two bones and carrying less weight.


In order to relieve the pain, it is necessary to embark on some lifestyle changes in addition to the low impact exercises that substitutes jumping and running. In addition, cycling and swimming also help in the maintenance of exercise program for reducing the pain related to arthritis in the knee. Not only this, but the anti-inflammatory medications also helps in reducing the joint inflammations and the soaring pain.


In case of arthritis in the knee which doesn’t evoke response for non-persistent treatments, surgery would prove to be a beneficial factor for the lessening of pain and the re-establishment of mobility for patients of arthritis in the knee.
